Shopify Hydrogen agency.
What a Hydrogen agency does, how to tell a good one from an expensive one, and what to ask before you commit budget.
A Shopify Hydrogen agency designs and builds headless Shopify storefronts using Hydrogen, Shopify’s React framework, deployed on its Oxygen edge hosting. Unlike a theme agency, the work is software engineering: architecture, Storefront API integration, third-party systems and a custom front end. Mooshfy is a Shopify Partner that builds Hydrogen storefronts end to end, and will tell you when a theme is the better answer.
What a Hydrogen agency actually does
A theme agency configures and customises something that already exists. A Hydrogen agency builds a web application that happens to sell things — and then keeps it running.
That difference shows up in the work: architecture decisions before design, engineers rather than theme customisers, and a maintenance commitment that does not end at launch. If an agency describes a Hydrogen build in the same language it uses for a theme build, that is worth probing.
Questions worth asking before you sign
The answers to these separate an agency that has shipped Hydrogen from one that has read about it.
- Can you show me a Hydrogen storefront you have deployed to Oxygen?
- Who owns the code and the repository when we are finished?
- How will you handle CMS, search and the integrations we already run?
- What does maintenance cost once it is live, and what does it cover?
- When would you tell us not to use Hydrogen?
- How do you approach caching and rendering strategy for our catalogue size?
Signals worth being cautious about
Two claims should slow you down. The first is any promise that Hydrogen will automatically make your store faster — performance is an outcome of how a storefront is engineered, and a careless Hydrogen build is slower than a well-built theme.
The second is a fixed package price for a Hydrogen project quoted before anyone has looked at your integrations. Scope drives the number here far more than page count does, and a quote given without a technical discovery is a guess someone will need to correct later.
How Mooshfy works
We start with a technical discovery and scope assessment, and come back with a written scope and a fixed number. If that assessment says a theme serves you better, we say so — we build plenty of those too.
You own the repository and every account from the first commit. We are a Shopify Partner and have been building on the platform since 2018.
Good to know.
What does a Shopify Hydrogen agency do?
It designs and builds headless Shopify storefronts in Hydrogen and React, integrates them with Shopify’s Storefront API and your other systems, deploys them to Oxygen, and maintains them afterwards. It is software engineering work rather than theme configuration.
How do I choose a Shopify Hydrogen agency?
Ask to see a Hydrogen storefront they have actually deployed, confirm you own the code, get maintenance costs in writing, and ask when they would advise against Hydrogen. An agency that never recommends a theme is selling, not advising.
How much does a Shopify Hydrogen agency charge?
Considerably more than a theme build, and it varies with scope. Serious agencies quote after a technical discovery rather than from a package price list, because integrations and custom functionality drive the cost far more than the number of pages does.
Do I need a Hydrogen agency or a Shopify theme agency?
A theme agency is the right and cheaper answer for most stores. You need Hydrogen when your requirements exceed what a theme’s architecture can express — custom configurators, deep integrations, a custom CMS layer or bespoke interactions.
Is Mooshfy a Shopify Partner?
Yes, Mooshfy has been a Shopify Partner since 2018 and works only on Shopify and ecommerce.
