Structured data is a small block of code that tells search engines exactly what a page *is* — a product, a review, an FAQ. Get it right and Google can show rich results: star ratings, prices, and answers that pull far more clicks than a plain blue link.
The schema types that matter for Shopify
| Schema | Where | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Product | Product pages | Price, availability, and ratings in results |
| BreadcrumbGraph | All pages | Clean breadcrumb trail in results |
| FAQPage | Product, guide, help pages | Expandable Q&A in results |
| Organization | Site-wide | Brand knowledge panel signals |
| Article | Blog posts | Eligibility for article rich results |
Product schema is the big one
For an ecommerce store, Product schema does the heavy lifting. It should include the name, image, description, brand, price, currency, and availability — and, when you have them, aggregate review ratings. Those stars in the results are one of the highest-leverage SEO wins there is.
Get it from JSON-LD, not the visible page
Google recommends JSON-LD — a script block in the page head — over microdata scattered through your HTML. It's cleaner, easier to maintain, and less likely to break when you change your theme.
Keep it accurate and in sync
The golden rule: structured data must match what's visible on the page. Marking up a price of $20 when the page shows $30, or reviews that don't exist, is a manual-action risk. Keep schema generated from the same source as your content.
Don't forget FAQ schema
A short FAQ block with FAQPage schema on product and guide pages can win extra real estate in the results and answer objections before the click. Use it where the questions are genuine.
Structured data and AI search
AI answer engines lean heavily on structured, machine-readable content. Clean schema makes your store easier for AI systems to understand and cite — increasingly important as shoppers ask ChatGPT and Google's AI answers before they ever visit a store.
Validate everything
After adding or changing schema, run the page through Google's Rich Results Test and check Search Console's enhancement reports for errors.
